Ooh Hello! You Smell Musty And Damp

You Smell Musty And Damp

How would you feel being greeted by the words, “Ooh Hello! You smell musty and damp!”? Well, that’s what happened to me just a few days ago. It was meant as a compliment (I know), but I wouldn’t say it’s the best compliment I’ve ever received. I will try to explain how it came about.

Je ne sais quoi

We moved to our new abode in darkest Wales at the beginning of last November. The house is old, very old and hadn’t been lived in for a number of years. It was completely renovated before we bought it, but had still been empty for some time. This gave it a certain je ne sais quoi as they say in France. I’d prefer to call it a mouldy stink. Anyway, we moved in and set about fitting something called Personal Input Ventilation which is a way of introducing fresh air into the building without losing heat. It helps stop condensation and keeps the house smelling fresh. You’ll have to Google it for the ins and outs, but I can recommend it for any house suffering from the effects of condensation.

The Coldest Winter

To add more warmth to the house I had an Inglenook fireplace and wood burner stove fitted. What a fantastic joy that’s turned out to be. In what has probably been the coldest winter known to modern man, that thing alone has got me through the incessant snow and ice we seem to have had since our arrival. Our daughters seem to visit us a lot more too, which is always very nice. I think they’re attracted to the thought of a little place in the country where they can come and relax on a weekend away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Oh Dear

Last weekend saw us having to visit the city and call in on one of our daughters. It’s only a couple of hours journey in the car and we arrived just after lunch time. That’s when I was greeted with the “Ooh Hello! You Smell Musty And Damp“! It was obviously not meant to sound as it came out, but you could see the hole getting bigger the more she tried to explain what she really meant. She was trying to say that our house in Wales had a nice warm aroma that was reminiscent of a welcoming countryside, friendly abode. I had transported that pong with me on our visit. Well I hope so, I’d hate to think I did really smell musty and damp!

There is nothing quite so comforting as a wood burning stove. And then when it’s not snowing there’s all the foraging around the countryside to be done. Happy days!

Thank you, Tish, I agree that the wood burner has been one of my best investments. The countryside too, even in the cold, bitter weather can be a joy to behold, although I am getting a little fed up with the snow. 🙂

Out of the mouth of babes, comes the truth. Did you mention that some day they will be musty & damp! 🧙‍♂️🧙‍♀️
