Catching Flies

Catching Flies

It’s finally happened! Officially, I have been caught catching flies.

I’ll Never Do That!

It’s the one thing I never thought would happen to me, but, it has and there is photographic evidence as can be seen at the header of this post. Guilty as accused m’lud. I used to see my folks do it when I was younger and I recall thinking to myself how rude are they. You’ll never see me do that, no, never. Until yesterday.

Wacky Races

We had made the two-hour journey to visit our daughter and her family in Birmingham. I hadn’t slept particularly well the night before, so I was already a little on the tired side when we arrived. In my defence, we have to negotiate many winding, country roads for nearly 90 minutes before we meet any sort of civilisation. Then it’s 30 minutes of ‘Wacky Races’ up the M5 and M42 motorways before hitting the main route into the city. A short hop through a gazillion traffic lights and we are there.

Away With The Fairies

Soon after arriving safely, a much-needed mug of tea and an offering of square crumpets were brought forth for my consumption. Add to this, the son in law lighting their newly fitted wood burner and before I knew it, I was away with the fairies. I do wonder though if they put anything in my tea, ‘Ketamine’ or similar? I have to check all avenues of suspicion like any good detective as this is so out of character for me.

ZZZZ’s

I must have had a good 90 minutes or so of ‘zzzz’s’ as the younger generation calls it. When I finally returned to the land of the living, I immediately made my apologies. No one seemed too bothered that I had sloped off to the land of nod, although I was a little perturbed by it. My excuse is that I needed the rest before the return journey home, in the dark. Strange thing though, when we did get home, after concentrating on driving through unlit lanes and mist, you would have thought a good nights sleep would have been assured. Not on your nelly!!

If you’re interested in the benefits of napping, here’s a website.

  1. When you got home you would have been too wound up by the tension of driving in the dark. So the nap you took was well advised. I’m afraid I was guilty of snoozing a lot when I visited Mum and Dad in Wilts, long ago. In my case it was always jetlag and the fact that they always had the house very warm. My Dad’s voice droned and I tried so hard to pay attention but…he’d suddenly ask a question….what?, who? I’d try to throw out an all-purpose response and Dad would adopt a bemused look as if to say “my daughter’s gone very peculiar, living in the States!”

  2. It’s acceptable for anyone over a certain age to ‘nod off’. It’s even expected I think. I’ve never done it (yet), but have been in danger several times. I used to tease my mother because she would do it all the time, and then upon being startled awake or waking up naturally, she’d deny she was asleep. “Just resting my eyes” was always her excuse. I hope Karma is kind and doesn’t seek revenge on me for finding startling my mom awake was funny. I wouldn’t appreciate it now I know!

  3. Well Trev, at least you are OK with driving after dark. I try to avoid that nowadays. I often find myself not sleeping well and then falling asleep after lunch. 🙂 I guess those things come with the territory. Have a great day!

  4. I don’t think any reasoning is required, Trev. The dark nights are enough to make me want to doze off.

My dad does this all the time, sat in his recliner chair watching TV or reading a book and he’s out. I bet my mum the other day when he did it that I could remove the book from his hands and replace it with something else without him waking. It was mighty difficult when I was nearly peeing myself laughing while trying to be as quiet and slow as possible. Ended up putting a little dog cardboard cut out in his hands (oddly enough the only thing nearby) and took some photos. He woke up and the look of confusion on his face was priceless.

I hope you enjoyed the time with your daughter and her family. Can’t say I’d want the pleasure of driving into the centre of Brum these days. xx

  5. I’m not sure which I find more tiring – driving down country lanes (they are familiar but go up and down a lot and are very bendy) or in towns with all the roundabouts and traffic light plus navigating when someone keeps moving the landmarks! I think after making it there you deserved a snooze!

I'd love to hear from you
