No English Food

No Flippin’ Fish and Chips or Beans On Toast!

My idea of travelling abroad is that you enjoy the sights, the weather, the culture and their culinary delights. Ok, some folks like to sit on the beach or at the poolside and a few drinks in the local bar every night. What ever floats your boat, but I did think it strange to hear of that lady from ‘up north’ who was disappointed with her all inclusive break in Corfu because there was no English food available.

What Was She Thinking?

What was she thinking when she made the booking? It’s not rocket science is it? You go to a foreign country and they are hardly going to have a ‘Spud U Like’ or a ‘Harry Ramsdens’ on the sea front, are they? Listening to her story, I get the feeling she would have been better staying at Pontins or Butlins, that kind of place, a holiday camp back here in the UK.

Any Chips?

It made me wonder too, how many people would class things like curry or pizza as English food? Even if you travel to America, their food is completely different to ours. I would like to have known what her usual diet is. She seemed to turn her nose up at pasta, rice and tomatoes, which I thought were good for you, well, better than a plate full of chips.

Pudding?

Perhaps there’s an ulterior motive here, but I won’t guess what that could be. I’m probably going to Pembrokshire in South Wales later this year, I hope they have some lava bread and cockles other wise I will be raising the roof!

  1. If you want English food, stay in England! It is amazing how many people consider their holiday “ruined” because they didn’t like the local food. To me that was half the fun of travelling.

    1. Exactly. I find it amazing that they expect it to be on the menu. Thank you, Carolyn. Yikes, I had to edit the post, I thought I was messaging my wife. 🥹

  2. I am with you Trev. Trying new things is half the fun and if I find that one dish is not to my liking it is hardly the end of the world! Enjoy S Pembs. I live just over the border in W Carmarthenshire and visy the S coast fairly often. But it is quite English down there so if you want lava bread and cockles try Llanelli. Cardigan is also more Welsh.

    1. Thank you. I live in Powys and enjoy stay at different places around Wales. I know Kidwelly well in Carmarthenshire and my ancestors came from Cardiganshire. Talking of cockles, I have some for lunch today. 😊
