It was such a nice start to the day last Tuesday that we decided to pay a visit to a place called Newtown which is about 20 miles from where we live. It’s been some time since we both ventured out some distance together plus it’s such a nice drive. It was cold, but the sun was shining and the sky was blue. Sadly, it didn’t stay like that for too long. By the time we arrived in Newtown, the clouds had gathered, hiding the sun and the wind had risen. Not only had it risen, but it was one of those bitter cold winds from the North, those ones that cut you in half.
Ooh, A Guitar Shop
There wasn’t a plan, we just took off and decided to go there as it has the usual choice of shops and supermarkets that we
haven’t got closer to home. There’s a great second hand guitar shop as well, although we did pop in, we kept our money safely in the bottom draw of my trousers where it’s difficult to reach. After wandering aimlessly for an hour or so and both of us thinking it might have been better to stay at home given how cold it had turned, we decided to look for somewhere to eat.
Lunch Time
It was getting close to lunch time and upon turning into one of the main streets we came upon a cafe’- restaurant called Jack’s Place. First impressions are always important to me and I was impressed with the look of this place. It had been recently modernised, looked sparkly clean and indeed had one of those five star notices on the door. The menu was attached to the window and ater a brief perusal, (the prices looked reasonable) we went in and made ourselves comfortable adjacent to a nice warm radiator.
Hungry
As always, I can never make my mind up about what to order. As I hadn’t had anything like a full English breakfast for some time and bearing in mind I was hungry and cold, I chose the breakfast. Wifey, Debbie, ordered herself a chicken burger and chips. All healthy and hearty, hmmmmmmmmm, but I must point out that it’s not often we eat like this. While we were waiting for our orders to be fulfilled, we ordered a couple of Latte Coffees. I must say too, that the owner, Jack was a very nice man indeed. He is Turkish by origin and he thought I may have been from his homeland, due to my swarthy skin, but alas, I had to disappoint him and tell him I am a ‘Brummie Welshman!’
Lunch For Two Or More
While waiting, a small plate with two rounds of toast arrived and the young lady said it was part of my breakfast. Two minutes later, the breakfast arrived!!! Honestly, I know you can see how much was there from the photograph, but it doesn’t do it justice. I could have invited the inhabitants of the village where we live and we could have all tucked into this MAHOOSIVE MEAL!! It took my breath away, not that there’s much to take, but I just didn’t know where to start. Even Debbie was taken aback. I’ve paid for three course meals that cost four times as much as this and would barely feed a budgie, so I was just so surprised with this.
Black Pudding
I struggled, I really did as one of my pet hates is wasting food. At first it seemed as though I wasn’t getting anywhere. I would eat some egg and there was more and it was the same with the mushrooms and the beans. The more I ate, the less I seemed to be getting through it. I have to say though, all of it was delicious, especially my favourite black pudding. Eventually, I did manage to eat it all, how, I don’t know. I don’t think I need to eat again for at least another month!
If you’re ever in the area of Mid Wales and want a something to eat, I can, without doubt recommend Jack’s Place in Newtown.
They have their own website: Jack’s Place
I love a man with a hearty appetite…
Thank you 😊
Supongo con semejante comilona se pasó el frío, además veo que dejaste el plato bien limpio.
Encantador texto.
Salud.
Thank you, Azurea. Yes, I left a clean plate. 😊
Wow! & Wow! That is some breakfast.
I love a full English, I justify it by telling myself that these days no one serves cooked breakfasts swimming in fat.
Mine are half the size of Jack’s splendid offering!
I probably have one every six weeks or so, usually coinciding with half term school holidays with the grandchildren. I could eat at nine in the morning and wouldn’t need anything else apart from cups of tea until evening. 🙂
I am probably the same, Sue, I usually have one once a month to six weeks and certainly nowhere near as big as this. Thank you 😊
What a culinary adventure! I hate to waste food, too. And thank you for the photos! They helped to reinforce your story perfectly.
Thank you, too. 😊
As you probably know, that would be my choice every time, but these days it would do me for the day
Thank you, Derrick. It certainly lasted me for most of the day. 😊
The plate is enormous, down in The Smoke hearty meals are discouraged, with much small plates, but higher prices.
It certainly took me by surprise and I was expecting a smaller plate. I have to say, it was delicious. Thank you. 😊
I live in the eastern part of the United States in New England. I grew up with brekkies similar to what you have pictured. I love everything about your plate of food except the mushrooms. You made me think about my Pops = ) he would have been in his glory with that. I enjoy your blog very much .
Thank you very much. I do appreciate your very kind words. You should have a breakfast like this, just once in every blue moon. 🙏😊
😂😂 On my first trip to Heathrow Airlines, I found a Restaurant for this waiter and said breakfast of the day, Sir. Thank you. What was delivered had me laughing 😂 it had the waiter running 🏃. Enough for 20 people 😂 He explained it was for me 🤭 really, what was on there were foods I’d never seen, and I wondered why he sat me on an enormous bench 🤭 and he began explaining it was £30.00. I didn’t need to work that out. Luckily, when I did travel, I had Platinum Express 🤭 because that English money is crazy. The black Pudding was yucky. Twelve fried eggs and 3 pounds of bacon 🥓 looked like an overeater, other things I’ve since forgotten. I felt for you, Trevor 😂 I remained hungry all 18 hours to fly ✈️ to Ireland 🇮🇪
Lol, that sounds like it was huge! Black pudding I just love it! Thank you 😊
That’s a proper meal out and a proper breakfast.
And so generous with the baked beans!
Yes, I think they were generous with everything. Thank you, Josie. 😊
Just noticed that the ad that came up right after your post was for “24 Hour Fasting for Beginners”. (This apparently is something you can pay for.)
Do you think someone is spying on you, or what?
Well, what can I say. 🤣Thank you again, Josie. 😊
It was a huge breakfast and its photo is gorgeous!
Thank you, Luisa. It was indeed huge. 😊
Wow! What a challenge, Trev! <3
Indeed it was, Cheryl. I surprised myself. Thank you 😊
Well done Trev! I hate wasting food too. I haven’t had a real English breakfast in over 40 years, but I had the American version some when in the early 2000’s. Nothing like a real English one except in size. It was always good to have English breakfast and then skip lunch if you had a busy day but I couldn’t manage it now, even if I just ate the veggie bits. Still I do remember enjoying most of those things once! In America restaurant meals are always enormous and everyone brings half of it home. I don’t really approve but no one asked me! It’s nice that Jack’s Place is doing well. It’s a very hard industry.
Thank you, Carolyn. You should treat yourself and make one, just for you. I have had an American breakfast and I ended up with heartburn. 😊
What a huge platter for breakfast! And your second photo proves you enjoyed every single bite of it. It must have been delicious.
It was huge, it took my breath away. It was delicious but I won’t be rushing to have another one soon. Thank you, Susan. 😊
Like I said on Instagram, Trev, I could easily woof down that breakfast! Yum. You live in Wales? Americans, right? 😂
Thanks, John. 😀
We used to stop off in Newtown on our way to and from South Wales – usually at the LIttle Chef (which I expect has closed by now). Based on your experience, I think we’d struggle to manage one breakfast between us.
I can’t say I know of a Little Chef in the area, come to think of it, I can’t recall seeing any recently. I wonder if they closed down. Thank you, Eileen 😊
I love big breakfasts like this. I had to look up black pudding to make sure I knew what it was. It’s always nice to get away for bit with the misses, even if the weather’s not so nice. I’m a big one for not wasting food also.
Thanks Herb. It was delicious. 😊
That’s a pretty huge plate, Trev, more like a platter!
I think you’re right, Rosaliene. Thank you 😊
Glad you struggled through for us! We would hate for you to waste any of that!
Glad you kept your money in the bottom drawer of your pants. Very sensible.
Thank you, Cecilia. I can be sensible at times. 😊
That looks huge!lol
It was huge. 😊
I can’t remember the last time I visited Newtown! Thanks for the reminder and the recommendation.
You’re welcome and thank you. 😊
I can eat breakfast anytime of day. Sounds delicious!
It was delicious. Thank you, Ruth. 😊
Good golly, Miss Molly! You’d give my stepfather, king of breakfasts, a hard run!
Lol, it’s not something I do regularly. Thank you, Ray. 😊
LOL, which is a good thing! Now and then, though, you’ve just gotta enjoy yourself.
Indeed. 😊
Clearly, steady as it goes is the ticket!
Thank you, June. 😊
looks delicious
It was, thank you 😊
That breakfast seems to have been a winner! Ooooh yummie!
It was, thank you, Helen. 😊
A classic and hearty British breakfast!
Indeed it is or was, Henry. Thank you 😊
I can’t believe you ate the whole thing. That was a meal.
I can’t believe it myself. Thank you, Mrs Shecky, good to see you in the blogging world. 😊
Sounds like you had a delicious meal. I love eating a big breakfast especially on the weekends. 🙂
Thank you, Lisa, it was delicious but so huge. 😊
If I visit Wales next time I go to the UK, Newtown sounds like the place to go for a good feed. Although I’m not a musician by any stretch of the imagination that old guitar shop sounds interesting too.
Thank you. You will certainly get a good meal there. Yes, the guitar shop which also sells keyboards and amplifiers is a real Aladdin’s cave. 😊
You got me thinking about a full 🇬🇧 breki now 🙏💙
Yep, it makes me hungry looking at it. Thank you, Craig 😊
i don’t know how you eat all of that either. It would have lasted me for three day, at least. Still, if you kept eating, it must have been good.
Thank you, Phyllis. It was delicious and a very rare treat for me. 😊
Wow! Haven’t had a breakfast like that since the last time I was in the UK, Trev (far too long ago)! Btw, “Brummie Welshman?” Did you live a long time in Birmingham?
It will probably be a very long time before I have another breakfast anywhere near to the size of that. I was born and bred in Birmingham and lived there until I was 61 when we moved to Wales. Thank you, Mitch. 😊
Well, then I imagine the Brummie twang is pretty much baked-in. ;>)
Indeed 😊
Wow that breakfast looks good! You must have had a lovely day after that 🙃.
Thank you, sorry for taking so long to reply, but I’ve only just seen your comment. 🙂
