Looking Forward To The Black Pudding

Since the world has seemingly been in lockdown, it has set me thinking, as it probably has everyone else. This must be the nearest thing to being in prison but without the guards etc!

Week 2

Into our second week here and already I’m getting agitated. I know how fortunate I am, things could be a million times worse, but it is still getting to me. I’m sure I’m not alone in these feelings, am I? The feelings of which I’m not even sure of, in fact, I don’t know which day it is anymore. Come to think of it, I don’t even know what month we’re in without looking at the calendar. So, trying to gee myself up, I’ve started thinking of things I want and can do when this is all over.

Moody Me

Black pudding came to mind. Having a selfish, moody me moment, I began thinking of things that would help get rid of this pang of negativity I was having. I love me some black pudding and can eat it raw or cooked. It’s not something I could eat every day, but as a treat, oh boy, it always hits the spot. I know it’s available now, but at the moment it’s not top of my priority list, although it is something to look forward to. Already I’m starting to feel better.

I Miss The Pub

Do you know what else I’m looking forward to? Going to the pub and sitting, chatting and having a laugh with the folks that frequent the place. The beer isn’t important although it will be to the landlord who must be having such a difficult time of it together with millions of others throughout the world at the moment. Living in a small village, the pub is the heart of the community, friendships are made, jokes are shared and of course, there’s gossip.

Open Mics

Open mics too, I miss them so much. It’s such a supportive thing and it doesn’t really matter if you can sing or not or if your instrument is out of tune. It’s the taking part and joining in with like-minded people. Happy days to look forward to again. In the meantime, I keep thinking of the black pudding, the delights of those rings sliced and cooking away in the frying pan. Mmmmmmmmmm, you can almost smell it.

Be Safe

It’s always the simple things in life that bring us the most joy. Sunshine on a Spring day, a Sunday morning lie-in or the smell of fresh black pudding cooking away. I hope you are all coping during this unprecedented time that we are going through. Be safe, stay well and treat yourself to some black pudding.
If you don’t know what Black Pudding is, you can find information here.

As the son of a butcher my late husband was practically weaned on black pudding! I was never too keen. Right now though I would love a full English with a portion of black pudding on the side.
Chin up, Trev, stay safe and well. ????

It seems black pudding is a little like Marmite in the sense that you either love it or not. I must admit, I’m yearning for a full English. Thank you, Sue, stay safe.????

We were never a black pudding family. Mum said they eat it up North, and naturally being a cockney, Up North was the nearest to being abroad for her. I never knew it, but I believe the nearest thing we have to it in Switzerland is so-called “blood sausage” (Blutwurst) which we cook and I quite like, although only available in the Winter months.
Otherwise bear up, although being the only person in the family that is still somewhat mobile, despite my MS, I still visit the store during the week. Our Kanton in Switzerland (Solothurn) in on the lower scale for infections and the store is limited to people entering. There are no queues to enter, and I usually manage quite well getting in and out and there is plenty on offer. Since becoming a golden oldie, it seems life is full of week-ends. I am wondering how the Easter holiday shopping will be, hopefully no stress. Keep well, enjoy your black pudding

      April 3, 2020

Thank you, Pat. I think blood sausage is very similar. We’ve been fortunate here with shopping as it’s a small community and we can order supplies through the local group who will deliver too, so it has made life a little easier. At the moment, we seem to be in one of the low count for the virus in the country. Stay safe, Pat and thank you for your comment. ????

When we are released from this house arrest, I’m going to the sea. The need to see and smell it is really getting to me, and just looking at pictures is not doing it for me!

We are lucky in our respective lockdown locations, Trev BUT even so… It’s not a little worrying how easily we were put under virtual house arrest. Am thinking that some people are also going to find getting unlocked quite a challenge too. Meanwhile, no harm in dreaming of black pudding and a trip to the pub.

    • Trev
      April 3, 2020

I think the fear factor had a big part to play in how easy the lockdown came into being. Yes, I agree, there will be people who find adjustment back to normality difficult. Let’s hope it doesn’t go on too long. Thank you, Tish ????

Can’t say I’m a black pudding fan but are you able to get any delivered, Trev? I’m hoping that’s not something people are stockpiling but considering I’ve seen a lack of cat litter, ridiculous increases on a £3 lightbulb to £80 on Amazon, and a lack of Birds Eye petite pois (I love these things too but surely one person/family can only eat so much) then nothing would surprise me. Hang in there, Trev. Let the dreams of pub life and black pudding keep you floating through.
    Caz xx

    • Trev
      April 3, 2020

Thank you, Caz. We seem to be ok around here for deliveries through help in the community. It’s scandalous how some prices are being increased. I hope those responsible are made to pay when this is all over. All will be well and the sooner we get through this, the better. Be safe, Caz and take care.

In boarding school we were fed the equivalent of black pudding only without any of the goodness you probably enjoy. It makes my toes curl to think of it. Once, we were fed brains disguised in batter. OOh what a nasty shock that was. I didn’t actually turn vegetarian till many years later, after seeing “The Silence of the Lambs” , but as I’ve got older I find it more and more disturbing to see meat in a supermarket. I call it the dead animal section (don’t have to worry about that now!) and the smell of meat cooking really bothers me. I’m not sure if other vegetarians experience this or if it’s just one more strange quirk I’ve developed! I am fine with other people eating whatever they like. Probably just as well we aren’t all “veg”. I just hope this current situation doesn’t end up forcing me to eat animals . I know plants die for me too and if I could think of another way to stay alive, I probably would! Hope you manage to find some BP for yourself!!! 🙂

Sell Silly Old Sod I will take a pass on the black pudding.
I have been in the house for almost a month,???? but Monday I had to go to the store. I came home and was so discombobulated. ????Wearing, hat, gloves, ????scarf, ????trying to stay away from people that don’t believe in the 6 foot ????rule here. Certain items were at a separate and you have to pay for them first, then you could do the rest of your shopping. Unreal!!!
    Health first!
People pay attention to what you are told by your governments and/or parliaments. You may not get it BUT you could pass it along to someone.

Thanks, Hope. Yes, I think I’m into my third week of isolation. There are people over here who think they can still go out and about and nothing will affect them. They don’t get it that they can pass on the virus to someone much more vulnerable. Selfish people. Stay safe, Hope and let’s wish it will be sooner rather than later when this is all over. 🙂

I just came across your site and it’s only my first post in and I love the way you write, so so relatable! Also your scenes of open mics and going to pubs to take part in the community are all scenes from movies that I absolutely love, scenes from the countryside. This makes me strangely happy knowing it’s not just in movies.
Stay safe and healthy and have a good day.

I wouldn’t be in this conversation if I hadn’t been in Switzerland @angloswiss (as I know black pudding from there which is not in the recipe for Yoruba meals from Nigeria) and stayed in Geneva which is quite far from and different from Solothurn. I was in Solothurn couple of times and sure will be back their someday. Cosy.

    What a tease Trev!
Being a chef, I thought I would learn something new about Black pudding!
Besides a great treat fried and added to a full English you can used to stuff all manner of things.
Several of my recipes use black pudding so go take a look. I have been flirting with the notion of making a Black pudding version of Scotch Egg, what do you think?
