My Old Bin

I have this old galvanised bin that’s been in the garden since we moved here in 2017. It’s always been empty, I’ve never used it and it sort of gets moved around from here and there. I once considered converting it to an incinerator, but I wasn’t keen on having fires. So it got put in a corner again.

Dusty Bin
After a thoroughly good clean of the garden this week and a need to visit the local nursery, I decided that something had to be done about ‘Dusty Bin.’ In truth, it probably needed to be put in the car and taken to the local recycling plant, but I just couldn’t be cruel to this rotund piece of junk. After all, he’s been here longer than we have and has never been any bother. Always sitting quietly, wherever we put him.

Chelsea Flower Show
After watching the Chelsea Flower Show on the television this week, I saw one of the exhibition gardens had a similar bin, strung up on a wooden beam and where you would expect rubbish to be cascading out, they had flowers. This got me thinking, what could I do similar to my galvanised junk tub? Obviously, I wouldn’t make something as grand as that, but I’m sure if I clean it up, I can grow something pretty in there.

Small Apple Tree Expert
Then I saw a photograph of a similar bin with a small apple tree growing in it. I fell in love immediately and thought that’s what I want. A small apple tree, if there’s such a thing, it would be perfect, not only for the bin but for the garden too. So, tomorrow, with all this continuing sunshine, I shall be scrubbing away at the bin and getting it clean and spotless for a new lease of life. I now need to find a small apple tree and fortunately for us, I have been told we have a small apple tree expert living close by. I love it when a plan comes to fruition!

If anyone is interested in potting small fruit trees, here’s a page from the experts. Website.

A good wheeze. Mary Tang, who isn’t able to blog any more, grew large productive fruit trees in large pots beside her house.

What a lovely idea, Trev. I do like it when things can be re-purposed. Unfortunately this means I have quite a collection of items sitting around waiting for that particular purpose and soon I am going to have to get hard-hearted! Good luck with your project. Keep us posted!

I was thinking whilst reading, don’t throw it away, it could be used as an unusual
planter. And you scrubbed and polished – hurrah – and now you have to show us the little Apple tree in. :)) Well done.

Trev, I think that using it for planter is a great idea. There are a number of dwarf varieties that would look great.
